Community Partners
"Searching out ways to connect special education students to their peers."
2009/2010 Pilot Project Announced!
Kewaskum High School
Community Partners is underway in a Pilot Test at the request of Kewaskum High School. Program Coordinator Jessica Frederick met with Special Education teachers from the school in August and together they mapped out a exploratory program that will become the foundation for future Community Partners endeavors in Washington County.

Community Partners Nuts & Bolts!
Purpose: Create and support one-to-one relationships between special education students and volunteers from the High school to provide inclusion in activities, encourage interaction and foster friendships.

Background and rationale for program at high school:
1. Identified as a need by parents of special needs students, special education teachers and special education students themselves.
2. Supported by special education teachers and school counselors.
3. Ready and willing group of students who want to participate in the program.
4. A chance to give high school students the opportunity to help others in the community.

Actual Implementation:
Special needs students are paired with a volunteer in the school. The matches meet as a group initially for lunches or special events.

Citizen Advocacy Program Coordinator arranges meeting with special education student and student volunteers. With parental consent, the match continues in school and eventually extends to activities out of school in the community

Pilot Program will begin with 2009 – 2010 school year.

Who: High School Special Education Students (partners) and Regular Education students (volunteers)

What: A program that creates and supports one to one peer relationships between special education students and regular education students for recreation, inclusion and friendship.

When: Group of students will meet regularly during school hours to get to know each other and enjoy a variety of activities.

Where: Most of the time spent together will be held at the High School. There may be an opportunity for trips off the school grounds later in the year.

How: Volunteers would be referred by a teacher or another school staff person. Each volunteer would have to fill out an application, provide 3 non family references and take part in an orientation session prior to being placed in a match. Partners would be referred by special education teachers and each would go through an orientation session with the program coordinator prior to being matched. Parents would also be notified for both groups of students.

After orientation session, the 2 groups would be brought together for a pizza party and get to know each other activities. This large group would continue to meet every other week throughout the school year.
